Beaches on the Gili Islands

The Gili Islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno – are surrounded by powder-soft white sand and warm turquoise water. Every island has its own collection of beaches, each offering something a little different: some are lively and close to cafés and bars, others are peaceful stretches perfect for swimming, snorkeling or simply watching the sunset.

Beaches on Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan has the most diverse beaches thanks to its larger size and vibrant tourism scene.

  • East Beach (near the harbour): This is the busiest stretch, lined with restaurants, dive shops and beach bars. It’s great for swimming, sunbathing and grabbing a drink between dips in the water.
  • North Coast Beaches: Quieter and less crowded, these beaches are ideal for relaxing and snorkeling straight from the shore.
  • Sunset Beach (west side): Known for its iconic swings in the water and spectacular sunsets over Bali’s Mount Agung. The beach bars here offer beanbags and cocktails with the best evening views.

Beaches on Gili Air

Gili Air is famous for its calm and welcoming shoreline.

  • East Beach (near the jetty): Convenient for those staying near the harbour, with shallow clear water and easy access to cafés and snorkeling spots.
  • North and West Beaches: Quieter stretches with fewer boats, perfect for swimming and enjoying sunsets in a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Snorkeling Points: Several beaches on the northeast are dotted with coral reefs close to the shore, great for spotting reef fish and sometimes turtles.

Beaches on Gili Meno

Gili Meno has some of the most peaceful beaches in the Gilis, often described as the most romantic.

  • East and Southeast Beaches: Calm water and clean white sand make them perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
  • Bounty Wreck & Snorkeling Area (west side): A popular spot for snorkelers who want to see the underwater statue garden and vibrant marine life just offshore.
  • Secluded North Beaches: Ideal for travellers who want privacy and a true desert-island vibe.

Activities and Tips

The beaches on all three islands offer plenty of activities such as snorkeling, paddleboarding and kayaking. Most snorkeling spots are close to the shore, but you can also book boat trips to reach deeper reefs or turtle-watching areas.

Because there are no motorised vehicles on the islands, beach areas remain peaceful. Remember to bring reef-safe sunscreen, stay hydrated and respect the natural environment by not stepping on corals or leaving trash behind.

The beaches of the Gili Islands cater to every mood – lively and social on Gili Trawangan, balanced and welcoming on Gili Air, and calm and romantic on Gili Meno. Whether you come for snorkeling, sunsets or simply to relax on soft sand, the Gilis’ beaches are the heart of the island experience.
