Gili Nanggu is a small islet off the southwestern peninsula (Sekotong) of Lombok, Indonesia. It belongs to the so-called “Secret Gilis,” a less-visited archipelago of islands including Nanggu, Sudak, Kedis, Tangkok and others, which lie off Lombok’s southwest coast. The island covers roughly 12.5 hectares and is largely undeveloped, offering a quiet, almost Robinson-like island experience.
Because of its sheltered location, Gili Nanggu is known for calm sea conditions, gentle waves, and excellent waters for snorkeling, even for beginners. The coral reefs around the island are close to shore, and the water is shallow, clear and relatively free from strong currents, making it safe and enjoyable for underwater exploration. Many snorkeling tours that include Gili Nanggu rate it among the best stops for snorkeling in the Secret Gilis region.
There is no widely confirmed official entrance fee for visiting Gili Nanggu. Visitors generally pay for transport (boat charter or tour) and possibly for services or conservation contributions tied to resorts or snorkeling operators, but the notion of a fixed universal “island entrance fee” is not clearly documented.
To truly experience Gili Nanggu beyond just a brief visit, staying at least a night is recommended. Although many travelers visit as part of a day trip (often 6-8 hours), spending a full night allows for more relaxed snorkeling, sunrise or sunset views, and a calmer atmosphere once day-trippers depart. Walking around the island is feasible in under an hour; some sources suggest about thirty minutes to circumnavigate the shoreline, depending on route and conditions.
As for surfing, there is no reliable evidence that Gili Nanggu is a surf destination. The island is characterized by calm, gentle seas rather than strong surf. Those interested in surfing would more likely find suitable waves elsewhere on the Lombok mainland, not here.
Access to Gili Nanggu is via boat. Departure points include West Sekotong, with boat rides of approximately 15 to 20 minutes, and from Lembar (which is farther), taking around 40 minutes by boat. Many snorkeling and island-hopping tours include Gili Nanggu together with neighboring islets such as Sudak and Kedis. Tours often begin early in the morning and return later in the day, with total durations around 8 hours including transfers.
In summary, Gili Nanggu is an ideal destination for travelers seeking tranquility, excellent snorkeling in calm waters, and a break from the more crowded northern Gilis. While surf is not a draw here, the underwater life, white sandy beaches, and relaxed island vibe make it a hidden gem of the Secret Gilis.
